Media Maven TV Forecast

I don’t usually do this, but I felt it my Mavenly duty to notify you all of a big night of television tonight.  From 8-10:30 tonight, you have the opportunity to become a part of some terrific shared cultural experience by jumping into some new series/seasons of some big shows.

At 8 pm on ABC, we’ve got the most buzzed about new show of the season, Pushing Daisies, from the mind of Bryan Fuller, formerly of Heroes and Wonderfalls.  There have been hundreds of articles, blogs, etc. about this new program, but none of those mean anything.  You need to check it out for yourself tonight and make your own judgment.  Then, we’ll meet back here and chat about it tomorrow.  Sound good?  Great (said in Bill Lumburgh voice).

Then at 9 pm on NBC, we’ve got the first real episode of Bionic Woman (since you all know my thoughts on pilots).  Is this series going to be something special, or just another good idea with poor execution?  Are we going to be made to care about Jamie Sommer?  Or is her heart as bionic as her arm?  Too corny?

And last, but certainly not least, the most important show of them all: the season premiere of South Park on Comedy Central.  For those of you who, like me, watched the first few seasons and then got bored, GET BACK IN NOW!  South Park is without a doubt the funniest show on television.  Period.  Not only that, but it’s the sharpest cultural commentary you’re likely to find anywhere.  Whether its making fun of the homeless, the fad of being metrosexual, Oprah– you name it, SP has done it.  Plus, this is the beginning of the second decade of the show!  A huge accomplishment for any show on any scale, so you know they’ll be pulling at all the stops.  Furthermore, Kristen Schaal (Mel from Flight of the Conchords) has joined the writing staff, so you know it’s gonna be funny.

So plop your butt down on that couch, strap in, and we’ll meet back here tomorrow to discuss.  Ready…break!
